My Art

I'm thinking of painting again, not just yet, but soon. When I finish more metal work, more jewelry, just a thought. I'm in this place of transformation and have been here for awhile. I will live here a bit longer and then move forward, renewed, healed, and I will paint again.
I like abstractions, emotional color, things that cause heat to rise in one's heart, passion, or the opposite of tranquility, a sense of being liquid. I also love black and white, but never anything spiritually gray, never anything just there. In black and white one appreciates the form of a thing, the structure. With color, one can imagine entire worlds of their own, places to walk, to hide, to linger.
I strive for peace in my life but in my art I want hard core in your face impact. Soon, like this piece, it was once a photograph, like me, it is now something else....

Women in the Arts Series - Eileen Gray

Eileen Gray (courtesy of designmuseum.org) in case you aren't familiar with her...

I recently watched a documentary about Eileen Gray Eileen Gray, Invitation To a Voyage, a woman I believe changed the world of design and architecture. You might recognize one of her pieces (below)...read about her in the links above.....brilliance. Utter brilliance....Famous for many designs but particularly House E1027

And of course, my favorite piece of furniture designed by Eileen Gray........

The Forgotten Meaning of Art

If you read the last line of the American Heritage Dictionary definition of ART, you will see that it says:

"A specific skill in adept performance, conceived as requiring the exercise of intuitive faculties that cannot be learned solely by study."

...................that cannot be learned solely by study.

And so there is something else at play when we create, something other than knowledge, something that preceded knowledge, that trumps it, and that lives elsewhere, perhaps in the soul.

Etsy Shop Announcement - Grand Opening

My Etsy shop is now open for business: http://www.jbaxstudio.etsy.com/ so please, visit. Here's one piece completely handcrafted by me, except for the luscious labradorite which was made by Mother Nature. The chain is long and short copper and silver links, all handcrafted and original; both metals have been aged with patina for an earthy yet modern feel. The labradorite chunk is topped with copper, silver, and brass wire.
Come by the shop, browse, pieces come and go, everything is one of a kind, although occasionally you will see variations on a theme but nothing is mass produced. There is more to come......this is just the beginning....and jewelry, while my passion, its not the only thing I'll be posting....
